Notable horses trained by Steve Asmussen include Curlin, Storm Treasure and Cuvee.

In the 2007 Kentucky Derby, Steven Asmussen’s Curlin took third place.

Curlin then went on to beat Street Sense, the 2007 Kentucky Derby winner, by a head in the Preakness Stakes. He also secured a second position, after Rags to Riches, in the Belmont Stakes – third jewel in the Triple Crown. Curlin went on to take the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic in October. Curlin’s regular jockey is Robby Albarado.

Two of his entries into the 2008 Kentucky Derby, Pyro and Z Fortune came in at 8th and 10th place, clearly not his best trained horses in the 2008 season. Worth noting is that Asumussen has constantly been fined for breaking doping restrictions on his horses, he has been found to over-medicate his horses. His latest conviction has been with Timber Trick who tested positive for lidocaine in May 2008.

Steve Asmussen was the US Champion Trainer by wins in both 2002 and 2004. In 2004, he broke Jack Van Berg’s record for wins by a trainer in a single season.
