The 2008 Kentucky Derby on 3 May was the 134th running of the race. First position was taken by Big Brown, for the winner’s prize of US$6,800,000. Second place went to Eight Belles who tragically broke two ankles as she crossed the finishing line, and had to be euthanised on the track. Third was taken by Dennis of Cork. Five supporting races were run on the day of the Kentucky Derby.

  • Elite Squadron won the $250,000 Grade II Churchill Downs Stakes (seven furlongs, for four-year-olds and up)
  • Game Face won the $150,000 Grade III La Troienne Stakes (seven furlongs, for three-year-old fillies)
  • Bayou’s Lassie won the $150,000 Grade III Distaff Turf Mile (one mile, for fillies and mares three years old and up)
  • Intangaroo won the $300,000 Grade I Humana Distaff (seven furlongs, for fillies and mares four years old and up)
  • Einstein won the $500,000 Grade I Woodford Reserve Turf Classic (1 1/8 mile, for three-year-olds and up)
